As we come to
Mother’s Day each year, I am always asked if I am going to preach a Mother’s
Day sermon. I always reply that I intend
to preach a sermon which will honor my mother and reflect the faith and
commitment which she modeled and instilled in me. Today, on this first Mother’s Day after her
passing, I intend to do no less, though we won’t be strictly talking about
mothers.
Instead, we’ll
be talking about what good mothers work to create—a precious, valuable family
history. In our case, as we explore the
letter to the church at Corinth, the family we
will be talking about is our church family. We’ll be trying to discover the powerful history we have behind us by
remembering just what is involved in being the church family we are today.
But we will
also seek to discover just how our understanding of who we are today will lead
us to the future which Jesus has envisioned for us. We will learn to embrace the presence of the
Holy Spirit in our lives (it is Pentecost, after all) and sharpen our ability
to hear his voice.
It shouldn’t be
that hard, for we have all learned, since childhood, to discern between the
voices of our parents and the voices of those who would seek to harm us. I think my mom would be proud.
